Member of Commission III of the House of Representatives Johan Budi welcomed the call from anti-corruption activists to issue a Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) on asset seizure. He reminded that currently, efforts to smooth the policy are in the hands of President Joko Widodo.
“But the ball is in the President’s court, because the one who makes the Perppu is the government, the president,” said Johan when contacted, Wednesday (3/7).
Johan reminded that the Perppu was issued according to the level of urgency and need. If it is very urgent, it can be issued immediately, just like when handling covid-19.
“If the government thinks that this Perppu is very urgent, then just issue the Perppu, because that is entirely the president’s authority,” explained the former spokesperson for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
Previously, President Jokowi was asked to immediately issue a Perppu Regulation on asset seizure. The reason is, the DPR has not yet ratified or seriously discussed the Asset Confiscation Bill.
Jokowi has actually signed a presidential order (Supres) regarding the Asset Confiscation Bill related to Criminal Acts. The Supres numbered R-22/Pres/05/2023 has been sent to the DPR on May 4, 2023 for discussion.
“The time available for the government and the DPR (current period) is very short, very short, so the hope is that a Perppu can be issued,” said researcher from the Center for Anti-Corruption Studies, Gadjah Mada University (Pukat UGM) Zaenur Rohman. (Z-11)
