Marketa Vondrousova’s bid to defend her Wimbledon title came to an early end following she was defeated by Spanish tennis player Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the first round on Tuesday (2/7).
The Czech tennis player was the first unseeded player to win Wimbledon following defeating Ons Jabeur in last year’s Wimbledon final.
However, in the first round of Wimbledon this year, Vondrousova’s game was filled with errors and double faults. As a result, she had to lose to Bouzas Maneiro with a score of 6-4 and 6-2.
This is the first time since 1994, when Steffi Graf lost to Lori McNeil, that the reigning Wimbledon champion has lost in the first round.
“I’m very happy. I think this is one of the most important moments in my life, in my career,” said Bouzas Maneiro.
Vondrousova’s first-round exit at Wimbledon means there will be a different champion in the women’s singles for the seventh straight year and she becomes the first defending women’s champion to lose in the first round in 30 years.
Serena Williams was the last female tennis player to successfully defend her Wimbledon title when she won in 2015 and 2016. (bbc/Z-1)
