During the beginning of his career, Dominican Vladimir Guerrero Jr. stated on several occasions that he would never play for the Yankees. However, following a difficult first half of the season, the Blue Jays slugger might be changing his mind.
Toronto sits last in the American League East with a 35-43 record entering Sunday, 16 games behind the first-place Yankees. According to Baseball-Reference, the probability of them making the postseason is less than 1 percent.
As a result, Guerrero recently expressed that he would be “happy to help any team,” even if it was the division rival in New York. Expanding on the topic further to Omar Guzman of Virus Deportivo, Guerrero had this to say: “It’s not that I’m trying to take back what I said regarding the Yankees. But this is a business. I sat down and talked to my dad (Vladimir Guerrero) and my family, and this is a business. And I said I would never talk regarding this topic (Yankees) once more, and a lot of people ask me every time I see the Yankees. But I told my dad that I wasn’t going to talk regarding it anymore.”
Guerrero also made it clear that “right now I am focused on helping my team and trying to get out of this bad streak.”
At the same time, though, it’s worth noting that Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said on MLB Network Radio in early June that “it doesn’t make sense for us” to trade Guerrero.
Clarifies regarding his return
San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. said he won’t be able to return from a stress injury to his right femur until following the All-Star break.
Tatis was placed on the injured list following dealing with the injury for virtually the entire season.
“It’s going to take some time. We tried to target following the All-Star Game, but we’re talking regarding something serious with my bone. It can get worse and we don’t want that,” Tatis responded.
“I tried to keep playing and I probably would have, but the doctors recommended that I get it treated now so it doesn’t get worse,” he added.
Tatis has been dealing with what has been described as a quadriceps injury. Padres manager Mike Shildt said the team discovered the injury a few days ago following tests and said the outfielder should be able to play but won’t improve without rest.
Tatis leads the Padres with 14 homers and won a Gold Glove and a Platinum Glove from the National League last year in his first season in right field.— MLB
