What damage was caused by the overflow of the Manzanares River in Sucre?

• Authorities deployed 3,600 officials to deal with the damage and 2,000 tons of social aid

More than 25 thousand people affected, three dead and hundreds of businesses and homes were destroyed when the Manzanares River overflowed in Cumanacoa, Montes municipality, Sucre state, on July 2. The situation arose following Hurricane Beryl passed through the Venezuelan Caribbean.

On Wednesday, July 3, the Minister of Interior and Justice, Remigio Ceballos, confirmed that a team of 3,600 officials had been deployed to assist those affected.

“We have activated the General Staff for Rain Care following the passage of Hurricane Beryl, coordinating with the different levels of the Bolivarian government and the Organized Popular Power in perfect civic-military-police union, in order to carry out the necessary mitigation issues that correspond according to the protocols,” he added in a statement. In addition to the deceased and those affected, authorities are searching for five missing persons.

Businesses and homes affected in Sucre

For his part, the governor of Sucre state, Gilberto Pinto, indicated on Wednesday, July 3, that 145 businesses were affected by the overflow of the Manzanares River.

“Around 145 commercial premises were affected (…) We are going to evaluate part of the infrastructure of the merchants and businessmen. We have also considered in the worksheet the loss of some cultivated spaces with some crops,” he said in an interview with Union Radio.

Ildemaro Villarroel, Minister of Housing and Habitat, reported on the program In Contact with Maduro that 7,990 houses were counted “with some type of damage” and, for the moment, the total loss of 360 homes.

Villarroel plans to deliver a total of 188 homes to those affected by the flooding of the Manzanares River before December 2024.

According to the authorities’ official assessment, the river’s overflow also affected a municipal market, roads and six of the 20 schools in the area.

Authorities sent 2 thousand tons of aid

Remigio Ceballos, Minister of Interior and Justice, reported that 2 thousand tons of social aid were sent to Sucre. Among the supplies sent are water, medicines, food, among others.

Ceballos also indicated that they are in the phase of analysis and evaluation of damages to the homes affected by the rains.

He also said that officials from the National Risk Management System, public security agencies and the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) are active in this sector.

After passing through Venezuela, Category 4 Hurricane Beryl headed toward Jamaica on Wednesday, July 3. It is expected to reach Yucatan, Mexico, on Thursday, July 4.
