Majority of Europeans support arms deliveries to Ukraine

People in Europe are largely in favor of supplying weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. This is the result of a survey in 15 countries published on Wednesday by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR).

Around 20,000 people were surveyed in Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, France, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Ukraine. Only in Bulgaria (63 percent), Greece (54 percent) and Italy (53 percent) is a majority once morest arms deliveries. There is less support for a possible NATO deployment of troops. The majority of respondents in all countries reject this.

In some states, the desire for Ukraine to win militarily over Russia dominates – for example in Estonia, Sweden and Poland. In Bulgaria, Greece and Italy, however, a majority is in favor of a quick negotiated solution. Other countries with balanced values on this issue are considered “swing states”.

No multi-year aid

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s plan to persuade NATO member states to commit to multi-year military aid for Ukraine has failed. The 32 allies were able to agree before the NATO summit next week to provide support worth at least 40 billion euros over the next year. However, Stoltenberg had originally called on the states to guarantee Ukraine long-term military aid worth at least 40 billion euros annually.
