State of Catastrophe declared for the entire Biobío region – La Discusión 2024-07-04 06:50:10

The Minister (s) of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, announced a state of catastrophe in the entire Biobío Region due to the multiple damages to at least 684 homes in the area, mainly in the commune of Arauco, as a result of the recent frontal system and its intense rainfall.

This measure, previously consulted with President Gabriel Boric and Vice President Carolina Tohá, aims to facilitate rapid and coordinated action by all public institutions.

“We have decided to declare a State of Catastrophe in the entire Biobío region. This declaration makes it easier for public services, for all public institutions, to operate more quickly when making decisions, particularly in emergency situations when services need to be contracted, goods need to be purchased, and that can be done more quickly,” said Monsalve in statements broadcast by ADN radio.

“In the face of an emergency, what is normally required is help to, first, help people, and second, to mitigate the effects of the emergency, and to reiterate that resources are available through Senapred. Senapred buys mattresses, blankets, food, and coal,” added the government authority.

The aim is to ensure that, if necessary, resources can be used efficiently to acquire goods and respond to emergencies, thereby enabling a more agile and effective response to the needs of the affected population.

The emergency also leaves more than 500 schools without classes, as well as 15,611 users in the region without electricity, according to the Superintendency of Electricity and Fuels (SEC).

On the other hand, EFE opted to close the railway bridge that connects Concepción with San Pedro de la Paz as a precaution, cutting off that section of the Biotrén at least for this Tuesday due to the rising Biobío River.
