With the aim of contributing to parliamentary work through Artificial Intelligence, the Chamber of Deputies, together with the Information and Communication Technologies Directorate of the Corporation, created the project called “Camar”.

The initiative was presented at the conference on “Artificial Intelligence in Parliaments”, organized by the Chamber and Bússola Tech., an event that took place at the headquarters of the National Congress in Valparaíso and brought together representatives from various congresses in America, Oceania and Europe.

The Caminar project emerged as an innovative response to the challenges faced by the Chilean National Congress during the Covid-19 pandemic and the country’s political situation.

The proposal, as explained by the Secretary General of the Corporation, Miguel Landeros, seeks to take advantage of the digital strengths of Congress and, in particular, of the Chamber.

The above, considering its regulatory repository and parliamentary databases. All this, with the aim of developing AI assistants that support legislative work in an efficient and transparent manner.

Future of Artificial Intelligence

Among its benefits, the initiative provides efficiency, transparency, innovation and proximity to citizens. This was explained by Esteban Sánchez, head of the Development Area of the Chamber’s Information and Communications Technology Directorate.

“Initially, this was always intended for the internal processes of the Chamber, but we have already identified areas where we might have an impact with processes involving citizens,” he said.

He added that this tool can help citizens find appropriate information and also ensure that all legislative documents can be delivered in a simpler and easier to understand language.

Finally, Sánchez said that this is a very new technology, so its impacts must be analyzed. “We have to test this to validate this tool and then deliver it to other users,” he said.

The Chamber of Deputies intends to continue with constant updating in regards to AI. In this regard, it seeks to keep the database updated with new regulations and projects.

Continuous improvement is also pursued, using user feedback to perfect each of the areas where AI has been used.

On the other hand, the institution will continue to innovate in new applications, all with the aim of exploring greater possibilities of generative AI that will support legislative work.

During the workshops, representatives from the House of Commons of Canada gave a presentation on the integration of Artificial Intelligence into a Digital User Satisfaction Strategy.

During Covid, they explained, the House of Commons reformed the way information was delivered through digital means. In this way, all these functions were handed over to teams that focus on one product.

They explained that they currently have around 11 product lines focused on the services of the House of Commons. These include automated voice recognition and digital documents for online petitions. They also include facial recognition for electronic voting and subtitles for session accessibility, among other things.
