KKE question in parliament about the catastrophic fires in Erymanthos and Ilia – 2024-07-04 06:27:06

Question to the Ministers of Rural Development & Food, Climate Crisis & Civil Protection and National Economy & Finances the KKE submitted on the subject of “Serious problems have arisen following the devastating forest fire in the Municipality of Erymanthos in Achaia and areas of the Municipalities of Ilida and Pyrgos in Ilia”
Here is the question:

“The devastating forest fire that affected areas of the Municipality of Erymanthos in Achaia and areas of the Municipalities of Illida and Pyrgos in Ilia, left behind a multitude of problems.

The non-existent essential fire protection measures of the areas, the responsibility of the current ND government, as well as the previous ones, were revealed once once more in a tragic way. Of the 800,000 euros requested this year by the Municipal Authority of Erymanthos, for example for fire protection projects, 200,000 were approved and these following the catastrophic fire.

In a mountainous and in many areas forested Municipality like that of Erymanthos, with intense livestock and agricultural activity, there is no integrated management and protection of the forests and in this context there are not, among others, the fire protection zones, while even at the time of the fire there were major problems. There was a delay in the action of aerial means, as a result of which the fire took on a large dimension, destroying houses (at least 10 have suffered up to very serious damage), sheepfolds, cars, agricultural facilities and machinery, feed stores and crops. Also, olive groves, vines, forest lands were burned with the total damages estimated at approximately 40,000 acres in both prefectures.

Also in Pinia, 10,000 acres of olive and fodder crops have burned. Another 11 farms and herds were destroyed and at least 600 dead animals have been reported. While in the Municipality of Pyrgos, 900 acres of crops have been destroyed.

Ministers are being asked what measures the government will take so that:

– The damage should be recorded immediately.

– To provide compensation for 100% of losses in production, agricultural, livestock capital and infrastructure, without terms and conditions.

– To replace the lost income of farmers and breeders.

– To immediately distribute animal feed to the breeders.

– The issue of water supply should be resolved immediately.

– Take all the necessary fire protection measures now.

– Anti-flood and anti-slide works should be carried out before the start of the rains.
