Iraqi President Condemns US Senator’s Statements Against Head of Supreme Judicial Council

Iraq – Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid denounced the statements of Republican Congressman Mike Waltz regarding the Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zidane, stressing that this is interference in internal affairs.

The Iraqi president said in a statement, “The statements do not only affect the person of the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, but they also affect the independence of the Iraqi judiciary, which is a fundamental pillar of the state.”

He added, “The Iraqi judicial system is one of the most solid independent judicial systems in the region. It is the guarantor of achieving justice, the supporter of the rule of law, and the guarantor of citizens’ legitimate rights to a free and dignified life. The security and political stability that Iraq is witnessing is clear evidence of that.”

He pointed out that “such irresponsible statements, if repeated, may affect the nature of bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States.”

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced earlier its rejection of the statements of US Representative Mike Waltz once morest the Chief Justice, which represents “blatant interference in Iraqi affairs.”

According to a report published by the Washington Free Beacon website, Republican Representative Mike Waltz, a member of the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committees, intends to introduce an amendment to a bill that would consider the Supreme Judicial Council and its head “as assets controlled by Iran.”

Reports also indicated that the amendment would affect the head of the Supreme Judicial Council.
