Two people were injured following lightning struck a house in the Tucaní sector of the Pan-American zone, in the state of Mérida.
The injured were a man and a woman, who suffered second and third degree burns, according to Luis Sivoli, director of Civil Protection (PC) Mérida, in an interview with Union Radio July 3.
The official said that five homes in the area were also affected by the incident.
He reported that the rains that have been recorded in recent days in the state have generated several thunderstorms in the Pan-American zone.
Rains in the state of Merida
Sivoli said that on July 2, the governor of Mérida, Jehyson Guzmán, ordered the deployment of 2,500 members of the National Armed Forces (FANB), state police, firefighters and volunteer organizations, as a preventive measure for the rains expected in the state.
On July 1, the mayor of the Libertador municipality (Mérida), Jesús Araque, reported that authorities were monitoring the heavy rains that occurred that day in the city of Mérida.
According to the July 3 report from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inameh), Mérida will register rainfall during the day, accompanied by thunderstorms in the followingnoon.
Damage in Venezuela due to rains
Heavy rains have been reported in several parts of Venezuela in recent days due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl through the Venezuelan Caribbean Sea.
These precipitations caused damage on the eastern coasts of the country, mainly in the state of Sucre.
In the town of Cumanacoa, in the Montes municipality, the rains caused the overflow of the Manzanares River. So far, authorities have reported three deaths, several missing and more than 25,000 affected.
According to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the river flooding left 8,000 homes affected, of which 400 have been completely lost and 1,200 are recoverable. In addition, three schools were also damaged, while 80 families were placed in temporary shelters.
Inameh forecast that tropical wave number 17 will reach Venezuela on July 3, which will cause a possible increase in rainfall in the national territory.
The agency reported through its X account that authorities are monitoring the evolution of the system because it has a 20% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone.
