The Kremlin on the French election: – The people’s wish is clear

– We are following the election very closely, says Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov regarding Sunday’s election in France.

The controversial EU-sceptic far-right party, which is led by the young profile Jordan Bardella and the controversial politician Marine Le Pen, received the majority of votes in the first round of the French election on Sunday.

– We will have to wait and see for the second round, but this election clearly shows what the French people want, says Peskov.

Accused of ties to Russia

National Assembly was founded by Le Pen’s father Jean-Marine and has long been accused of having close ties to Russia.

In 2014, when the party was called the National Front, it took out a loan of several million in a Russian bank, and Le Pen has called the Crimean peninsula, which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2018, Russian territory.

A report to the French National Assembly last year also noted that party members had traveled to Crimea and the Donbas region, which was occupied by Russian forces, before Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Tusk warns

Poland’s prime minister warned earlier on Monday regarding far-right parties in response to the elections in France. He called on France to turn around before it was too late.

– They like Putin, money and power without control. Either they already rule or they seek power, both in Eastern and Western Europe, writes Donald Tusk in a post on the messaging service X.

At the same time, he warns that far-right populists want to join forces in the EU Parliament.

– In Poland, we managed to reverse this disastrous development at the last minute, says the former EU president, referring to the fact that in October last year he took power from the right-wing populist party Law and Justice (PiS) following eight years.

German concern

Germany is also worried regarding the election in France.

– No one can be indifferent when a party in our closest partner country, which sees Europe as a problem, is so far ahead in the opinion polls, says German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who herself belongs to the far-right party Brothers of Italy, however, has a different view on the matter.

– The constant attempts to demonize people who do not vote on the left are a trick that fewer and fewer fall for, says Meloni.
