The planets seemed aligned, but the Olympic Games of e-sports under the banner of the IOC (International Olympic Committee) will not take place in 2024 in Paris. “It’s a great missed opportunity,” several industry insiders agree, while all eyes are on Saudi Arabia, which is organizing its own competitive video game competition: the Esports World Cup, which starts this Wednesday.
A year ago, the lights were still green for the e-sports Olympics to take place in Paris. In May 2023, the Counter-Strike Major – one of the biggest tournaments in competitive video gaming that brings together the cream of the crop of teams focused on this flagship franchise -, organized by the publisher Valve and Blast, was held for the first time in France, thereby establishing its place on the world map of e-sports. A success with a cherry on the joystick: the French club Vitality won this XXL tournament organized in Paris. Enough to comfort the government which had positioned itself at the beginning of 2023, through the voice of the Minister of Sports Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, to host “at the end of 2024”, the very official Olympic Esports Week of the IOC.
