“We are not looking for slaves”: Advertisement in Serifos that went viral within 24 hours

Complaints made by seasonal workers in catering are more or less known to everyone. Inhuman living conditions and little money are in many cases everyday life for dozens of young people.

In the last 24 hours, an advertisement for a cold kitchen assistant in Serifos has been circulating on the internet and it has gone viral for a very specific reason and mainly because it is… honest.

The ad posted on a page for cooks and confectioners states that a satisfactory salary is provided and not “the 1200 euros”, also the insurance is complete as is the food and “no toast, full meals from the kitchen, coffee, soft drinks, water”.

At the same time accommodation is provided in a house with a roommate “completely renovated and spotlessly clean with a yard, parking and sea view”. At the same time, transportation costs to and from the island are provided, one day off per week and tips shared with everyone. Finally, a bonus is given.

However, the ad also writes regarding the negatives: “the season is short, 3 months, there is work, there is running, sometimes there is stress to get the work done, we are a small shop with 20 tables”.

“I know this all seems too good to be true. Especially in these times when the attitudes I hear from various employers are tragic to say the least. But personally, I like to treat the person who leaves his home and comes to work with us, as I would like to be treated. With respect and understanding. Nobody leaves their house for fun. We all have needs and I personally respect them without limits”, the ad concludes.

Full ad:

We are IMMEDIATELY looking for a cold kitchen assistant (with or without experience) to round out our team.

The following are provided:

Satisfactory salary (I don’t mean €1200 as a satisfactory salary)
Full insurance with all legal benefits (not half, student, 1 per month) etc.
Full board (no toast and Coca Cola, full meals cooked in our kitchen as well as your coffee, your soft drink, your water etc.)
Accommodation in a fully equipped house with a roommate. Completely RENOVATED and CLEAN with yard, parking and sea view.
Transportation costs to and from Serifos
Tips (everyone gets, not just the service)
8 hours (it is very rare to need 1 hour more – if necessary, overtime is paid)
1 repo per week (rest is important for everyone)
Bonus at the end of the year if we do well (we gave in the previous 3 years as well)
The working conditions are humane.
We don’t work until we drop.
We don’t work 12 hours a day.
We are not looking for slaves.
We are looking for partners.
All we ask is respect, honesty and appetite for work.
Not to say everything is perfect and positive and you wonder whose pit the fava has…
The season is short (3 months)
He has a job.
He’s running.
Sometimes he is anxious to get the job done.
We are a small shop with 20 tables.
We are the best rated shop in all of Serifos.
But as the top rated shop, everyone wants to come to us.
And I’m not saying this to play it off.
But because we really don’t see the customer as a pocket.
We are looking to make everyone happy.
To leave with a nice memory of Serifos (and Greece in general) and not to feel that we took advantage of them.
Customers and partners.
The season lasts until September.
Ideal for students.

PS I know this all seems too good to be true.
Especially in these times when the attitudes I hear from various employers are, to say the least, TRAGIC.
But personally, I like to treat the person who leaves his home and comes to work with us, as I would like to be treated.
With respect and understanding.
Nobody leaves their house for fun. We all have needs and I personally respect them without limit.
