Hurricane Beryl hits Grenada

This Monday, Hurricane Beryl, classified as “extremely dangerous”, hit the south of the Windward Islands as a Category 4 hurricane, with winds and storm surge that pose a potentially life-threatening threat, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported.

The federal agency updated its most recent bulletin, indicating that the eyewall of the hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 240 kilometers per hour, reached land on Cariobacú Island.

The NHC urged residents of the Grenadines and Cariobacu Islands to remain in their shelters as winds from Beryl, the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, will rapidly intensify within the eye of the cyclone.

Beryl arrived on the islands as a Category 4 hurricane, considered “extremely dangerous” on the Saffir-Simpson scale, which ranges from 1 to 5.

According to the latest report, the system was located 50 kilometers northeast of the island of Granada, in Cariobacú.

The cyclone is putting islands in the southern Caribbean at risk and has led to the cancellation of the annual summit of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) scheduled to take place from Wednesday to Friday in Grenada.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida, has issued a hurricane watch for Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Tobago. A tropical storm threat has also been issued for Martinique, Trinidad and St. Lucia.

Beryl is the first hurricane in the Atlantic basin and the earliest Category 4 hurricane recorded in the area. It is moving west at a speed of 31 kilometers per hour.

During the Atlantic hurricane season, which began on June 1, three tropical storms have formed so far: Alberto, Beryl and Chris.

On Sunday, Tropical Storm Chris developed in the Gulf of Mexico and later made landfall in the evening in Lechuguillas, a town in the southern Mexican state of Veracruz.

It is worth noting that this year, the Atlantic will have a hurricane season well above average, with the possibility of up to thirteen hurricanes, of which up to seven might be major, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States.
