CNE extends closing of electoral simulation until 7 p.m.

Caracas, Jun 30 (EFE).- The president of the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela, Elvis Amoroso, reported that the simulation that is taking place this Sunday in view of the presidential elections on July 28 will end at 19:00 local time (23:00 GMT), three hours later than planned, due to the “influx” at the polling stations, which opened their doors at 8:00 local time (12:00 GMT).

The announcement comes following the head of the Chavista campaign and President of Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, said that the simulation “looks like an election” due to the “long” queues and the “immense participation”, despite the fact that only 7.5% of the centres that will be set up on election day are operational, when some 15,800 spaces will be in operation, compared to the 1,174 open for the rehearsal.

Citizens arrive to vote in the electoral simulation this Sunday, in Caracas (Venezuela). EFE/ Henry ChirinosInternational observers from various organizations, including the Carter Center and representatives of the UN, who are deployed throughout the national territory, are participating in this simulation, said Amoroso, who did not report the number of members of the missions, which do not include the traditionally largest, that of the European Union.

The invitation to the EU, which the CNE issued in March, was cancelled in May due – according to the president of the electoral body – to the personal and individual sanctions that the community bloc maintains once morest officials and members of Chavismo, which existed at the time the invitation was sent, as well as when the 2021 regional elections were held, which were attended by a mission.

Although Amoroso explained, when the invitation was revoked, that the measures imposed by the Twenty-Seven do great harm to the country’s economy and to the Venezuelan people, these only affect, on a personal level, the private assets that the sanctioned officials have in community territory, as well as the prohibition of travel to the EU.

In the elections on July 28, 21,620,705 citizens are called to vote to elect the country’s president for the next six-year term, from among 10 presidential candidates.
