“The extremists of the right and the extremists of the left are not our partners and we are very clear that we do not want to have anything to do with Putin’s representatives,” emphasized the president of the Commission and candidate of the European People’s Party, Ursula von der Leyen in the joint press conference she gave with the Prime Minister of Croatia, Andrej Plenkovic in Split on the sidelines of her pre-election campaign which ERTNews is among the media covering her.
He added that “three conditions are important. First, all the MEPs we want to work with must be pro-Ukraine, pro-rule of law and pro-Europe. That should be clear.”
Regarding the possibility of Russian interference in the elections, Ursula von der Leyen responded that Moscow’s behavior is a real threat. “We see a lot of Russian involvement in social media, using and abusing disinformation. We have put in place instruments to tackle this misinformation, for example the Digital Services Act (DSA) where we can ask platforms and ensure that they clean up the misinformation. We are debunking the lies of the Russians in these elections and in the issues of these European elections on many different levels,” he added.
For his part, Andrej Plenkovic noted that “disinformation campaigns are present everywhere. Mainly in online forums and communication no doubt. They affect today’s democracy. The world has a lot of interaction with the digital world” and referred to young people as “a generation that is based literally 90% on what they have online rather than what they see on TV or read the newspapers. This is basically how their filters are created. It’s something we all face and we all see.”
The Croatian Prime Minister pointed out that “in terms of the political orientation of the EPP, the most powerful and most influential political group in Europe, we are now in an election period. In this period we want the best possible results in Europe, which means as many MEPs as we can and that is why it is time to talk regarding our programme, to talk regarding prosperity, democracy, security, Europe as our home ».
Afterwards, Ursula von der Leyen and Andrej Plenkovic met with young people with the President of the Commission calling them to vote, while at the same time they walked in Split and talked to the citizens.
