Achaia lags behind in the number of visitors to its museums compared to the other two prefectures of Western Greece, with visitors showing no particular preference for the archaeological sites and museums of the region.
The fact comes as proof that the prefecture is not a tourist destination, as museum attendance shows the tendency of tourists to choose an area, but also their non-existence leaves economic “gaps” in local economies.
Naturally, Ancient Olympia still holds the reinsnot only in Ilia but throughout Western Greece, attracting over half a million visitors by 2023 in its archaeological site and museums.
According to the data, the visitors of archaeological sites of Ilia, Aitoloakarnania and Achaia reached 567,426 in 2023, compared to 416,051 in 2022.
Regarding evisitors to the museums of Western Greecethe 2023 they amounted to 147.941vs 137,823 of the previous year. Visitors, in total, were 715,367 in 2023, compared to 553,874 in 2022.
As is obvious, the largest number of visitors was recorded in the archaeological site and the museums of Ancient Olympia, where in 2023 they reached a total of 584,452, compared to 438,116, in 2022.
The number of those who visited them is also noteworthy archaeological sites of Etoloakarnaniawhere reached 36,358 in 2023, compared to 31,251 the previous year. The only decrease recorded in 2023 compared to 2022, concerned the visitors to the archaeological sites of Achaia, where from 5,776 in 2022, they decreased to 4,920 in 2023.
In Achaiathe highest number of visitors was recorded in Archaeological Museum of Patras, while the number of visits to the Aegis museum also showed an increase. On the contrary, a decrease in visits was recorded at the archaeological site of Vouteni and at the Fort of Rio. The Archaeological Museum of Patras was visited by 24,884 people (2023), once morest 21,467 (2022), the museum of Aegis 1,059 people (2023) once morest 861 (2022). The archaeological site of Vouteni 4,320 people (2023) once morest 5,088 (2022) and the Fortress of Rio 600 people (2023) once morest 688 (2022).
In Iliathe archaeological site of Ancient Olympia visited 481,211 people (2023) vs. 338,365 (2022), the Museum of Ancient Olympia 85,410 people (2023) vs. 85,179 (2022) and the Museum of the History of the Olympic Games 17,831 people (2023) vs. 14,572 (2022).
In Aetoloacarnaniawere the focus of visitors’ attention the castle of Nafpaktos and the Xenokratei Archaeological Museum of Messolonghi. In the Castle there were 31,226 people (2023) compared to 25,578 (2022) while in the Xenokratio Museum 7,733 people (2023) compared to 5,413 (2022).
