Lockheed Martin: the technological standard-bearer

The American company Lockheed Martin has proven to be particularly prolific since the end of the 1990s. It opens the hunt for 5e generation with the F-22 Raptor. This aircraft with impressive characteristics made its first flight in 1997, entering service in 2005. The Su-57 and the Su-75, valid rivals?

They are part of the new generation of equipment touted as invincible by Vladimir Putin’s government since 2018. Both manufactured by Sukhoi, they have the characteristics of 5e generation, starting with the stealthstealth and the ability to operate in contested terrain within the constraints imposed by electronic warfare. The Su-57 first flew in 2010, but it was not until 2020 that it joined the Russian fighter. Particularly imposing with its 14 meter wingspan, it has two AL-41F1 engines, post-combustion turbojets, temporarily fitted to the units delivered by Sukhoi. The Su-57 might reach a top speed of 2,600 km/h (Mach 2.45). Supposedly deployed above the Ukrainian sky, many observers question the characteristics of the device, some even doubting its stealth aspect.

Same story for the Su-75 “Checkmate”, a cheap alternative in which India was initially to participate. The government of Narendra Modi withdrew from the program following a few years, citing too high a cost for outdated architecture and engineering. The Checkmate was due to appear sometime in 2027, but for the moment, little information has been released by Russia on the subject. The J-20, a 5th generation fighter with an air of déjà vu

China, now positioning itself as the second world power, might not miss the boat regarding the new generation of fighters. From the J-XX program, designed in the 1990s, the J-20 made its inaugural flight in 2011 before being officially unveiled in 2016. It was put into service the following year. Designed by the Chegdu company, it is equipped with two AL-31F M2 followingburning turbojet engines.
