Peruvian police arrested the president’s brother Dina Bolluarte today for alleged involvement in a corruption ring that appointed high-ranking officials in exchange for kickbacks, prosecutors said.
The investigation came as the president, whose popularity is hovering around 10 percent according to opinion polls, has been embroiled in a scandal known as Rolexgate, as she is accused of owning several luxury watches and accused of “illicit enrichment.” She claims that she had borrowed the watches.
Nicanor Boluarte Segara, 64, the president’s older brother, was arrested at his apartment in Lima. The interior ministry believes he was the head of a network that appointed prefects and deputy prefects in exchange for “financial gifts”. These officials represent the government in the various provinces of the country. They are appointed directly by the presidency and the interior ministry.
Nicanor Boluarte allegedly took advantage of the powers granted to him by his sister to sell offices. According to prosecutors, the organization “developed its criminal activity immediately following Ms. Boluarte took office,” on December 7, 2022.
A legal adviser to the presidency and six other people were also arrested as part of the police operations that took place in several cities of the country during which “thorough searches of 26 properties” were carried out.
