Is one complaint enough to change your whole life? How easily is information “fabricated”? Where does the truth begin and end? Where does the polarization and condemnation of public opinion lead before the presumption of innocence is calculated? Who are the victims and who are the perpetrators? Who are the “Alligators” of this society?
The Square Theater Company and the CALD Arts Company partner to present “Alligators” which echoes the spirit of the times.
Alligators: The premise of the play
Professor Daniel Turner (Gerasimos Gennatas) seems to have it all; a job he serves with love and devotion and a wonderful wife (Faye Xyla) who loves and supports him. Everything turns upside down when a former student of his accuses him of sexual abuse. The seed of doubt is planted in this seemingly family paradise.
Within hours, his life changes as he, despite denying the complaint, suddenly finds himself at the center of media and social media exposure. He is removed from his job, his old friends and associates turn their backs on him, secrets and lies come to the surface and suspicions once morest him begin to become certainties. The case is taken over by the lawyer Rachel (Athina Hatziathanasiou), who is called upon to discover the truth. Are rumors stronger than evidence?
All this seems like a dark fairy tale in the eyes of his 9-year-old daughter Alice, when the jungle of human nature is brought into their home. “Alligators” are everywhere and are ready like a pack to devour her and her parents.
12 years later, Alice (Sandy Hatziioannou) tries to face and reconstruct the memories of her childhood. Who really is her father?
Viewers are asked to convict or acquit Daniel as public opinion rages once morest him and he furiously defends his innocence.
Director’s Note Yiannis Laspia
“In each of us there is a world far away, but also excruciatingly close. Quite dark, but also very colorful. A world made of memories happy or sad, real or imagined.
They are the stories we lived or we think we lived according to the stories of others. They are the stories that haunt us and follow us. It is the stories that make us die and reborn us.
It is our childhood.
Our first toys, our first songs, our first loves, our first books, our homes and friends, our dreams and nightmares, our hopes and fears, our parents. Or rather the actions and decisions of our parents.
In Andrew Keatley’s work the wild and labyrinthine world of adults attacks head-on the innocent and bright world of children.
The things we are afraid to say out loud become our worst fears and fairy tales get mixed up with reality. The jungle is transferred to our civilized homes and the most dangerous animal remains the “dark” nature of man. Capable of the best, but also of the worst.”
