Converting public buildings into housing and giving young people financial help to buy property: the new centre-right Portuguese government today presented its own strategy to tackle the housing crisis, which is hitting big cities particularly hard.
The government’s plan includes a series of regarding 30 measures that must be approved in the coming months for the government to respond to a serious problem, as the right to housing is a fundamental right, Prime Minister Luiz Montenegro said today at a press conference in Porto.
“In recent years we have not met the needs” in terms of housing, even “if the right steps were taken. We will keep the things that were done well,” the head of the minority government emphasized.
Portugal has been facing a housing crisis in recent years due to the sharp increase in prices due to speculative phenomena in the purchase and rental of real estate, a serious problem that mainly affects large cities.
The previous socialist government had already adopted a package of measures last year to combat the housing crisis.
“We must strengthen the supply,” said Housing Minister Miguel Pinto Luz, underlining that one of the priorities will be to “make available” “thousands of public buildings for housing.”
The government also plans to offer subsidies and tax relief to young people buying property, but also to suspend some of the previous government’s measures – notably a cap on seasonal rentals.
Montenegro, whose government does not have an absolute majority in parliament, has said it is ready to discuss these measures with other parties. “We are counting on all the parliamentary groups” to discuss these proposals, he concluded.
