Asunción, IP Agency.- The president of the National Electricity Administration (ANDE), Félix Sosa, highlighted as a “historic milestone” the immediate possibility of selling electricity directly to the Brazilian market, and announced that in a short time the available energy from the Acaray plant will be offered.
“It is something historic, we always dreamed of having the possibility of making our energy available and offering it directly to the Brazilian electricity market,” said the president of ANDE this Friday in a radio interview.
He indicated that currently the Brazilian electricity market is already reached but through the transfer of energy, with an agreed rate, so it is an important milestone to have the possibility of directly selling energy through new mechanisms.
«This is one more way for us to place our energy in the Brazilian electricity market, which, although it may fluctuate, opens up the possibility that Paraguay can invest in additional generation, and important plants can be built from which electric energy can be exported. to Brazil,” he said.
Sosa announced that ANDE will soon begin to dispose of and offer the energy generated at the Acaray plant in order to be able to enter the Brazilian market and learn how it works.
He acknowledged that the Brazilian electricity market is very complex, that it has constant fluctuations, so the intention is to “start little by little.”
In any case, he highlighted that this possibility of sale also creates “very favorable conditions for Paraguay to become the center of electricity generation and export to neighboring countries and mainly, in this case, to Brazil.”
Paraguay will continue to access cheaper energy from Itaipu
On the other hand, the president of ANDE also highlighted that the continuity of the 2007 operating agreement, achieved in the recent understanding with Brazil, benefits Paraguay through ANDE to have priority in surplus energy.
«The validity of the operating agreement makes it possible and gives preference to Paraguay to use the cheapest energy, which is surplus energy. So ANDE does not contract 100% of its demand and uses that cheaper energy,” Sosa explained, highlighting that this condition remains until 2026.
He also reiterated that maintaining a high rate for the energy generated in Itaipu, at 19.28 MW/month, is still convenient for Paraguay, which currently contracts 39% of its corresponding power. “Therefore, Brazil, which hires the most, is the one that contributes the most in financial terms,” he indicated.
“A high rate is still in Paraguay’s interest because we still do not use all of our energy,” he confirmed. However, he indicated that Paraguay needs to invest regarding 500 million dollars annually to improve its electrical energy transmission and distribution system, and be able to use all the power that corresponds to it.
At no time will the user be affected
Finally, Sosa stated that “at no time” will the maintenance of a high rate impact the ANDE customer, since the additional cost for the purchase of power from Itaipu Binacional, of approximately 73 million dollars, will to be compensated from that additional income that Itaipu will have from now on of approximately 650 million dollars.
