The Israeli army said it was evacuating around 100,000 people from eastern Rafah. This is ahead of an expected Israeli ground offensive on the southern Gaza city in the near future.
“The estimate is around 100 thousand people,” a military spokesman told reporters when asked how many people had been evacuated.
People were ordered to move to Muwasi, Israel’s declared humanitarian area near the coast. The army said it had extended aid to the region, including field hospitals, tents, food and water.
The Israeli army added that its operation to begin evacuating residents of eastern Rafah was temporary and limited.
Meanwhile, a top UN official accused Israel of continuing to deny the UN humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip. He warned that a massive famine had occurred in the northern part of the enclave of 2.3 million people. (France24/Z-2)
