During this morning, the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, delivered statements regarding the progress of the investigation into the crime of three police officers in Cañete.
In an interview with Radio Pauta, Tohá reported that there are solid clues that might lead to those responsible for the brutal murder.
The three police officers were found burned in the pickup truck in which they were traveling, which has shocked the community. The minister assured that, despite the limitations for security reasons, the investigative team is not blank and is following several lines of investigation.
Tohá also pointed out the possibility of the presence of organized crime groups in the area, suggesting that the crime might be related not only to protest motives linked to the Mapuche cause, but also to activities such as drug trafficking and wood theft. This tragic event represents a setback in the area, where it seemed that violence rates were decreasing.
“yes, and there is a mix. There are criminals who are especially dedicated to vehicle theft, they also participate in drug trafficking or wood theft, but who sometimes join in the activities of groups that have a more demanding agenda,” he commented.
The minister highlighted the work of the police in the region to provide security to the population and expressed her regret for the loss of lives and the setback in the community’s progress.
When asked regarding the presence of drug trafficking groups and groups specialized in wood theft in the area, Tohá confirmed that they exist and that they sometimes join the activities of groups with protest agendas.
Regarding the investigation, the minister stated that clues and investigative lines are being followed with the aim of clarifying the crime as soon as possible. “There are some lines of investigation here, but we have to discard them, explore them, to see if they give results or not,” Tohá concluded.
