Although maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the best way to avoid diabetes, there is a form of this disease that is autoimmune, and therefore inevitable. However, researchers are working on preventive and curative medical remedies for type 1 diabetes. Scientists have specially developed a new experimental drug once morest type 1 diabetes, and it looks promising.

A drug that protects pancreatic cells from attack by the immune system

In recent years, research on diabetes has made great progress. Although there are already medical ways to improve the quality of life for those suffering from this disease, many research programs are well on their way to finding ways to prevent and even cure diabetes. One of these researches in particular has been carried out by researchers from Johns Hopkins University. The latter is working with a drug based on therapeutic monoclonal antibodies called mAb43.

According to the results of the study published in the journal Diabetes, this drug is the most promising, to the extent that it was able to prevent and reverse the onset of clinical type 1 diabetes during experiments on mice. The researchers explained that it is a unique substance in that it directly targets insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Specifically, this medication binds to a small protein on the surface of beta cells, which helps protect these cells from attack by the body’s immune system cells.

This may allow long-term use of this medication without serious side effects. If this drug passes all the necessary tests to allow it to be marketed, it might change the lives of many people. Note that in France alone, more than 2,000 children under the age of 15 are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes each year. This chronic disease is caused by the inability of the pancreas to produce enough insulin because the immune system attacks the pancreatic cells that produce it.

A drug that can change the lives of many people

« People with type 1 diabetes face lifelong insulin injections and many complications, including strokes and vision problems, if the disease is not treated properly “, explained Dax Fu, lead author of the study. With this new drug, people suffering from type 1 diabetes can get rid of these limitations. However, this will take time, as the drug is currently only developed and tested in and on mice.

In fact, in the current study, the researchers used a mouse version of the monoclonal antibody to make the drug. It was then tested on 64 non-obese mice specially bred to be predisposed to type 1 diabetes. The drug showed impressive effectiveness, to the extent that 35 weeks following weekly administration of mAb43, all mice were no longer diabetic. In some cases, researchers even noted an extension of the lifespan of mice. The case of a mouse, which actually developed diabetes during those 35 weeks, but was eventually cured, also indicates that the drug can reverse the disease.

Furthermore, scientists are discovering new ways to regulate blood sugar.
