A Russian court sentenced a political scientist who criticized the war in Ukraine to 5 years in prison

Russian news agencies quoted a Moscow regional court judge’s decision to “change the sentence and sentence Kagarlitsky to five years in a correctional colony.”

Last July, Russian authorities arrested a prominent political scientist and accused him of inciting terrorism online.

Mr. Kagarlicki was detained following he posted a comment on social media that Ukraine’s attack on the Russian Crimean bridge was more or less understandable.

The new sentence was announced two months following this sociologist and supporter of Marxist ideology was awarded 600,000. ruble fine for criticizing the Kremlin’s military campaign on social media.

With Moscow carrying out a large-scale crackdown on dissenters, the fine for B. Kagarlicki was considered an unexpected and rare form of punishment.

The 65-year-old is a well-known academic who has written extensively on Russian society and left-wing political history.

He taught at the Moscow Higher School of Economics, which was once a university considered a bastion of liberal thought.

In 2022, Russia declared B. Kagarlicki a “foreign agent”.
