New York – Today, Friday, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring the State of Palestine’s eligibility for full membership in the United Nations. The resolution recommends that the Security Council reconsider this issue positively.
143 countries voted in favor of the resolution, 25 abstained from voting, and 9 countries rejected the resolution.
According to the draft resolution, the State of Palestine qualifies for membership in the United Nations in accordance with Article 4 of the Charter, and should therefore be accepted into membership in the United Nations.
The resolution reaffirmed the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including the right to establish an independent State of Palestine.
The resolution stipulated the inadmissibility of seizing lands by force, the preservation of the territorial integrity of all occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, the withdrawal of Israel from the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, and the complete cessation of all Israeli settlement activities.
The resolution affirmed that the General Assembly affirms the conviction that the State of Palestine is fully qualified for membership in the United Nations, noting the widespread affirmations of the support of the members of the United Nations for accepting the State of Palestine as a member of the United Nations.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations is requested to take the necessary measures to implement this resolution.
Additional rights and privileges for the participation of the State of Palestine will be activated as of the seventy-ninth session of the General Assembly, including occupying seats among member states, the right to register on the list of speakers, make statements on behalf of the group, and submit and present proposals and amendments, in addition to the rest of the privileges enjoyed by delegations.
