Japan – The nuclear envoys of South Korea, the United States and Japan affirmed their determination to confront “the serious security threats emanating from Pyongyang and its increasing military cooperation with Russia.”
In a statement following a meeting in Tokyo on Thursday, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said that the tripartite talks came amid ongoing tensions resulting from Pyongyang’s continued push for its nuclear and missile programs and its tough rhetoric once morest Seoul and Washington.
Director-General for North Korean Nuclear Affairs at the Foreign Ministry in Seoul, Lee Jun-il, held talks with Jong-bak, the top US official for North Korean affairs, and Hiroyuki Namazo, Director-General for Asia and Oceania Affairs at the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo.
The ministry statement said: “The three parties affirmed their continued determination to confront the serious security threats posed by North Korea’s provocations, its illegal weapons of mass destruction, its ballistic missile programs, and its deepening military cooperation with Russia.”
The envoys stressed the importance of maintaining close trilateral cooperation in confronting North Korean threats, promoting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and resuming dialogue and diplomacy with the “isolated regime.”
