After a series of joint country efforts, carried out through the ministries of Economy, Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, producers and exporters, it was reported that the District Court of the State of Sinaloa ordered the reopening of the borders for the entry of shrimp farm that comes from the countries that make up the FTA between Mexico and Central America, a measure that was taken unilaterally since last January.
This was reported by both the Ministry of Economy (Mineco) and the president of the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agexport) Gabriel Biguria, who described the reopening as positive, due to the high expectations of restarting sales to the neighboring country, although he indicated that there is still There are still measures to be implemented by the Mexican authorities to register this information in the customs systems.
In addition, entry will be carried out with conditions since companies that export from Guatemala, and other Central American countries, must verify the traceability of the product’s origin, an aspect that, according to the manager, is already met by companies in Guatemala that are certified, then of the review carried out in October 2023.
Last year the country exported around 3 million kilos of shrimp to Mexico, through the customs in Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, and according to data from the productive sector, the blockade endangered around 5 thousand jobs and directly impacted the economy of 20 communities on the south coast of the country, Mineco explained.
Unilateral measure
The president of Agexport indicated that there are high expectations of recovering the market but it will take time because almost 4 months of exports were lost due to the measure taken by the Mexican authorities to prevent the triangulation of the product from Ecuador to that market.
This affected the exports of the three Guatemalan shrimp-producing companies that sell their product in the Mexican market, although they have the corresponding authorization, valid until December 2025, for their aquaculture farms. These are Acuamaya, Oro del Pacífico and Innova Guatemala, said the Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, Héctor Marroquín, on Wednesday the 5th when referring to the subject.
The official explained that the judge’s hearing took place on Monday, May 6, and they were waiting for the resolution. Even if it had not been favorable, they were already preparing to activate the dispute settlement mechanism allowed by the Free Trade Agreement with Mexico.
“Guatemala has been exporting shrimp to Mexico for more than 16 years. It is the third commercial partner for this industry,” Biguria mentioned, highlighting the importance of this industry in generating employment and income for several communities.
