No social services for Massimo Carminati who now risks having to return to prison. A new twist suddenly falls on the infinite proceedings “Middle World”, better known by the name of “Capital Mafia”. Last April the matter seemed to finally be coming to a close with the decision of the Supervisory Court of Rome to entrust “the blind man” to social services to serve the remainder of his sentence. However, the Attorney General Salvatore Vitello challenged the Court’s decision which thus suspended the award pending the ruling of the Supreme Court. The stoats will therefore be able to confirm the Court’s decision or overturn the sentence. If this last hypothesis were to occur, the prison doors might be reopened for Carminati.
One of the main protagonists of the “Mondo di mezzo” investigation, also known as “Mafia Capitale”, still has to serve three years and two months in prison, plus another eight months for the insults directed at deputy prosecutor Luca Tescaroli in the courtroom . Total residual sentence three years and ten months, just under four years of imprisonment, the limit below which it is possible to request the alternative measure to prison. Carminati was arrested in December 2014 together with 27 other suspects including Salvatore Buzzi (founder of the 29 Giugno cooperative) as part of the investigation launched by the Rome Prosecutor’s Office. On 22 October 2019, the Court of Cassation definitively annulled the aggravating mafia charge, noting the presence of two distinct “simple” associations: that of Buzzi and that of Carminati. It was also decided to hold a new appeal process to recalculate the sentences of the main defendants. On 9 March 2021, the first criminal section of the Court of Appeal of Rome sentenced the “blind” man to 10 years in prison and Buzzi to 12 years and 10 months. Penalties also confirmed by the Supreme Court in September 2022.
The suspension of entrustment to social services is a real cold shower for Carminati who had chosen to dedicate his time in foster care to services for immigrants. While awaiting the ruling of the Supreme Court, “the black man” remains “suspended free”, that is, out of prison, at least for now.
