On Mexican Mother’s Day, thousands of relatives of disappeared people took part in rallies in Mexico City and other cities to protest once morest the slow pace of investigations into the fate of the missing. “We expect truth, justice and that the authorities do their work,” activist Araceli Rodríguez told radio station W Radio on Friday.
According to official information, around 100,000 people are believed to have disappeared in Mexico. Most cases began in 2006, when violence from drug cartels and other crime syndicates began to escalate in the Latin American country. Many of the missing are presumed dead. Groups of mothers have been searching for human remains on their own in mass graves in remote locations for years.
