This Thursday, May 9, the heads of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) were summoned to a meeting by a group of district prosecutors with the aim of raising funds to be able to finance advertising messages on television media in support of the head of the MP, Consuelo Porras. This was confirmed by a source close to the institution who requested anonymity.
According to the statement, financial support was required by each Prosecutor’s Office, although the amount requested was not specified in that first approach. The source assured that the majority might accept for fear of some retaliation for not having supported.
The source added that the group seeking to organize the bosses are the regional prosecutors of the metropolitan area, Dimas Jiménez; from Quetzaltenango, Miriam Barrios; and from Chimaltenango, Aura López.
Within the organizational chart of the investigative entity, the district prosecutor’s offices are above the specific ones (Women’s, Narcotics, Organized Crime, etc.) and Fiscal Agencies. In turn, they are only below the National Coordination and Porras’ office.
This comes two days following the Head of the MP gave a press conference insisting on her legal mandate and showing her disagreement with the bill presented by the Executive to reform the Organic Law of the entity to seek to remove Porras from the position.
At that press conference, the district and regional prosecutor heads remained seated behind the MP authorities while wearing the full institutional vest, as required by written communication.
On the other hand, in Quetzaltenango it was announced that all staff were summoned to the headquarters in zone 3 of the municipality to take a group photo “in support of the authorities of our institution,” reads WhatsApp messages that circulated.
The message also mentioned that the staff would focus on coordination to make a -monetary- collaboration to be able to finance a vinyl blanket that will contain the photograph taken and support for the institution.
The MP, through the Department of Communication and Press, points out that no institutional instructions have been issued in this regard and that in Porras’ recent message the support and backing of the prosecutors present at the activity was evident.
Likewise, “it is unknown whether personnel are organizing these actions, however, if so, they have the legitimate right to do so.”
