What perception do employees aged 55 and over have of the quality of life and working conditions, commonly known as “QVCT”, on which their health and commitment depend? To answer this question, the Qualisocial firm, specializing in psychosocial risks, conducted a study with Ipsos on the subject, in November 2023, among 3,002 employees working in France in public and private organizations. On this basis, a focus was placed on employees aged 55 and over, i.e. 549 people.
First lesson: these seniors are distinguished from all employees by lower satisfaction with relationships and the atmosphere at work (68% say they are rather satisfied, compared to 72% for the entire sample), as well as the organization of work (61% versus 65%). The gap is still widening on the use and development of skills and on the career path (53% of seniors satisfied compared to 58% for the entire sample). We can see the fact that seniors are rarely the best served when it comes to requesting training at the end of their career.
Second lesson: the employer’s consideration declines with the age of the employee. The gap actually reaches its maximum with regard to the appreciation of the place that management gives to their employees. On this point, only 43% of seniors say they are rather satisfied, compared to 51% for all employees. “They feel more sidelined, because the relational skills acquired through experience and which they possess are of less interest to employers than technical skills, in particular mastery of digital tools”analyzes Camy Puech, founding president of the Qualisocial firm.

The rapid development of automation and artificial intelligence in all sectors might, however, change the situation, believes the latter: if increasingly ergonomic machines and software become capable of executing complex instructions expressed in everyday language. , human and relational skills (ability to work in a team, sense of responsibility, stress management, time management, etc.) which are refined with experience might regain importance.
Healthy and efficient
Finally, third and final lesson: there are multiple sources of senior engagement. The Qualisocial/Ipsos study identifies three levers that organizations can use to optimize their engagement: “Pride in the work done, the opportunities given to them to fully use their skills, the ability of employers to encourage a positive working atmosphere”explains Camy Puech.
