ALGIERS- Three agreements and contracts concerning mining and metallurgical projects in Gara Djebilet (Tindouf), Tala Hamza d’Oued Amizour (Bejaïa) and Béchar, were signed between national companies and international partners.
Supervised by the Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, the signing took place on the sidelines of the celebration ceremony of the 58e anniversary of the nationalization of mines and the 57th anniversary of the creation of the National Company for Mining Research and Exploitation “Sonarem” at the International Conference Center (CIC) “Abdelatif-Rahal”.
This is a contract between the National Iron and Steel Company “Feraal” (a subsidiary of the Sonarem group) and the Chinese company “Sinosteel” concerning the construction of a first iron ore pretreatment unit in level of the Gara Djebilet mine, with an estimated capacity of 4 million tonnes.
The agreement was initialed by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Feraal, Ahmed Benabbas and the Managing Director of the Chinese company, Hua Guanglin.
The 2nd agreement concerns the creation of a joint venture between the Turkish company “Tosyali” and “Feraal”, with a view to the creation of a production unit for iron ore concentrates in the Toumiat area (Béchar) , with an annual production capacity estimated at 1 million tonnes.
The agreement was signed by the CEO of Feraal and the CEO of Tosyali, Alp Topcuoglu.
As for the 3rd agreement, it concerns the construction of an underground mine at the lead and zinc deposit in Oued Amizour, with an annual capacity estimated at 170,000 tonnes of zinc and 30,000 tonnes of lead, between the Algerian-Australian joint venture “West Mediterranean Zinc” (WMZ) and the Chinese company Sinosteel.
The agreement was signed by the CEO of the Algerian-Australian company, FatehDrifi and the Managing Director of the Chinese company, Hua Guanglin.
These agreements establish fruitful partnerships in the mining sector, with the aim of strengthening the sector’s role in the national economy in the future.
On this occasion, the CEO of the industrial group “Sonarem”, Mohamed Sakhr Harami, highlighted the importance of the mining projects currently being realized in recent years in Algeria.
According to the same official, the next few years will see the development of new mining projects, like the Béni Abbas baryte and Béchar manganese deposits, which, he said, will create new added value. for the national economy, with a view to reaching a turnover of 5 billion USD for the group by 2030.
These mining projects, continues Mr. Harami, are in addition to the Gara Djebilet mine project which makes it possible to provide national steel factories with iron crude and save around 2 billion USD, at the zinc and lead deposit of Bejaïa, as well as the integrated phosphate project in the east of the country, with a view to processing 10 million tonnes of phosphate annually.
For her part, the president of the Steering Committee at the Algerian Geological Service Agency Karima Tafer-Bakir spoke of the pivotal role of this body created in 2024 and which is essentially based on the collection, study and analysis of biological data in Algeria and the census of mineral resources.
And to add that the Agency is currently working on the realization of a vast project to update the geological maps relating to the mineral resources that Algeria contains.
During this ceremony, many workers and executives in the mining sector were honored for their efforts and contributions to the development of the sector over many decades.
