Cool and Comfortable: Huawei FreeLace Pro 2 Headphones Review

2024-05-10 01:17:25

Good morning.

Few companies try to create the widest possible range of headphones in order to offer the buyer a choice of different form factors to suit literally every taste and ear. In the Huawei range we see the dominance of TWS earphones; there are models such as FreeBuds Pro, or very unusual and fashionable FreeClip headphones, made in the style of headphones.

As the name suggests, the FreeLace Pro 2 is a headset that you wear around your neck, like a rubber cord that you pass over your head. This headset design allows you to place the control panel on a cord, add another microphone to it, and place a large battery that supports up to 25 hours of operation on a single charge.

The relative freedom in the arrangement of electronics in the headphones allows a lot to be accomplished; engineers can experiment with sound and other features, offering a different interpretation than TWS models. And this is where the range of headphones from HUAWEI stands out advantageously: it is not only a variety of form factors, but also a different interpretation of sound, where everyone can choose a model adapted to his preferences.

Let’s look at the technical characteristics of the headset and briefly list the main points:

  • Bluetooth version 5.3, support for two connections (read: devices) simultaneously;
  • HUAWEI HiPair – fast sync with HUAWEI devices;
  • SBC, AAC, L2HC, LDAC;
  • High-resolution audio;
  • Dual magnetic dynamic driver, 10.8mm;
  • Frequencies from 15 Hz to 40 kHz;
  • Equalizer, up to ten presets, automatic adjustment to noise and volume levels;
  • ANC 2.0, active noise cancellation, three settings, applied automatically;
  • AI noise reduction during a call;
  • Touch control of noise reduction modes on the left earbud;
  • Wired control panel with control keys;
  • Two microphones on each earbud (four total) plus a MEMS microphone on the wire;
  • USB Type C connector on wire;
  • 150 mAh Li-Pol battery;
  • Full charging time can be up to 60 minutes, in 5 minutes you can get up to 5 hours working time;
  • Battery life (with priority to sound quality) – up to 10/15 hours with and without noise reduction;
  • Battery life (with priority to connection quality) – up to 12.5/25 hours with and without noise reduction;
  • Call duration – up to 9/10.5 hours with and without noise reduction;
  • Headphone weight – 34.5 grams, cord length – 875 mm;
  • Helmet color: green, blue, black.

The helmet is in a small box. Inside, in addition to the headphones themselves, you will find silicone earbuds in the color of the case; the size is set to M, but you can choose larger or smaller headphones. It is worth choosing headphones that fit your ear so that wearing headphones is comfortable and does not cause discomfort.

The cord is wide and soft without bending, and aluminum inserts on the sides balance the headset when you wear it.

The headphones themselves have magnets, so they can be ‘snapped’ once closed, the headphones will easily fit you.

The ergonomics of the headset will seem unusual to many, but given its weight of 34.5 grams, it puts no pressure on your neck; following five minutes you just stop noticing it. In the morning I left the house with a helmet and only took it off in the evening. There are no negative effects, but the main thing is that even with sharp movements of the head, when bending, the thread does not move or slip. The helmet fits your neck like a glove.

The helmet is available in three colors: light green, blue and black.

The fit of the helmet means you will wear it all day long and it is important to understand which color to choose. Black is as neutral as possible and goes perfectly with any outfit. The light green color is bright and eye-catching. And here you need to think carefully regarding what suits you. It’s not difficult to hide headphones in your pocket, but few people will do it.

I love unusual designs, that’s exactly what I have here. The control unit with buttons has a built-in USB Type C connector, you simply remove the connector and can immediately connect the headphones to your phone for charging. This is the easiest way: any phone allows you to charge the headphones, and the phone battery charge is not actually wasted (the battery capacity is 150 mAh). When connecting to a HUAWEI smartphone for the first time, HiPair technology works, which automatically connects the headphones to the phone, you can configure them, watch training videos on how to control the headphones. Everything happens quickly and easily.

I like the operating time of the headphones because it is very, very long. Thanks to noise reduction, you’ll get up to 9 hours of talk time, up to 12.5 hours of music listening (HD codecs). If noise reduction is not necessary, listening time increases significantly.

The fit of the headphones is tight, they have a stopper that allows them to stay in your ears and not fly out even while running. It is the sports component that will interest many in this model.

The passive noise reduction of these headphones is very good, it cuts you off from the outside world, sounds are heard as if through a membrane. You can hear loud noises such as cars, but minor city noises are reliably blocked. And therefore, you may not perceive the start of ANC 2.0 noise reduction as a bright transition from noise to silence. But the beauty of noise reduction in this model is that it is implemented adaptively, it adapts to outside noise, and this adjustment is automatic, it works very well. I noticed that as soon as I enter the subway from the street, the headphones “listen” to the noise of cars, and then a more aggressive noise reduction mode turns on, which gives a better sound image. And not only at maximum volume, the headphones have a reservation in this regard: here the noise reduction does not increase the volume to the maximum level, which is good for your hearing.

During conversations, noise reduction uses AI algorithms, the sound of the voice is brightened, but it does not become artificial for your interlocutor, there is no metal or speech synthesis. The sound is therefore good, but external noise is suppressed in almost all situations. The presence of an additional fifth microphone on the control unit is a big plus; it is this design that makes it possible to qualitatively analyze external noise and cut it off. In regular TWS earbuds, the implementation of noise reduction faces restrictions on microphone placement; they are located near your ears and cannot be separated in space. There is no such limitation here.

Sound is an individual thing and all headphones should be listened to. The list of drivers present and their size does not give the slightest idea of the sound. The first association with these headphones for me is: soft. They are tuned for smooth sound, including bass, there is no harshness here. The sound is enveloping, it’s pleasant, and it’s good to listen to popular, electronic, dance and classical music. But rock compositions with default settings do not seem expressive enough, here you need to choose another equalizer (there are a dozen of them, and you can also customize them yourself).

The most universal sound by default, then finding the way you listen to music, what you like. I would rate these headphones as excellent for city streets; they sound close to the HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 3, although the sound is still different. Good sound, but I remind you once once more, you should find headphones and listen to them yourself, it’s the best decision. We all hear differently and you shouldn’t rely on someone’s subjective opinion on this matter.

The following codecs are supported: SBC, AAC, L2HC (Huawei proprietary HD codec), LDAC. In the settings you can set the connection priority (SBC, AAC codecs are then selected) or audio priority (HD codecs are selected).

The control panel on the cord is very simple, by touch you can control the rewinding of music, its playback, there is a sliding button that turns off the headphones (it is almost impossible to accidentally press it).

The price of HUAWEI FreeLace Pro 2 headphones is 6999 rubles, which seems to be an adequate offer in terms of price/quality ratio. This is an expansion of HUAWEI’s model range; headphones will be of interest to those who do not like to constantly wear TWS headphones (here you can wear them on yourself and use them only at the right times). No extra cases, just headphones around your neck. They are also interesting for those who play sports: the headphones are perfectly secure and do not slip due to sudden movements. Unusual design, good sound, long operation on one charge and the ability to recharge the headphones from your smartphone at any time. An interesting model, although not the most popular due to its form factor.
