The person responsible for the attempted murder of a minor in Aguadas, Caldas is sentenced to 37 years.

The Attorney General’s Office achieved a significant conviction for Carlos Andrés Cano Marulanda, alias “El Chusco” or “El Costeño”, who was found guilty of the attempted murder of a 3-month-old child and a 33-year-old relative.

The events occurred on September 25, 2022 in the El Paraíso neighborhood of Aguadas, Caldas.

The violent attack took place when Cano Marulanda entered a home with the door loose and opened fire indiscriminately once morest the residents. One of the shots hit the baby and another hit his aunt. According to testimonies, the aggressor had previously had an argument in a bar in the area with the victim’s relatives.

Cano Marulanda, linked to the criminal organization known as ‘Los Mesa’, was involved in micro-trafficking in the north of Caldas and participated in a territorial dispute over the marketing of illegal drugs.

Although the accused denied his participation in the crimes of attempted homicide and possession of firearms, the Prosecutor’s Office presented solid evidence that supported his responsibility. As a result, the judge handed down a sentence of 37 years and 2 months in prison.

Both the minor and his injured family member were taken to a medical center where they managed to survive, although the child lost mobility in his legs.

The National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (Inpec) will be in charge of determining the place where Cano Marulanda will serve his sentence.

This case highlights the importance of the investigative work of the Prosecutor’s Office to guarantee justice and protect citizens once morest violence and organized crime.
