No more “12345” for passwords – Britain bans the use of easy passwords
 – 2024-05-09 18:33:26

Britain is becoming the first country to ban common and easily predictable passwords such as ‘admin’ or ‘12345’ as part of ground-breaking legislation to protect once morest cyber attacks.

Starting today, if a user suggests a similarly easy password when creating a new account, they’ll be prompted to change it.

According to the NordPass website, the most commonly used passwords in the UK last year were ‘123456’ and… ‘password’.

The UK is the first country in the world to introduce similar regulation. The law is part of the new telecoms infrastructure security regime, which is designed to improve the UK’s resilience to cyber attacks.

Under the law, manufacturers of all internet-connected devices – from mobile phones to high-tech refrigerators – must implement minimum security standards.

They should also post contact information so bugs and problems can be reported and resolved, and inform consumers of the minimum time they can expect to receive important security updates.
