Ultrabalaton
Over 25,000 participants registered for the 18th NN Ultrabalaton, which took place from May 2nd to 5th.
This year, competitors from 26 different countries, including Canada, took part in the largest mass sporting event, which has taken place annually since 2007 USA, Türkiye and South Korea. Almost 300 individual fighters braved the 211 kilometer route. Furthermore, 2,500 running groups took part, mainly duos and trios. But other compositions were also possible in order to cover the route as a team. Cyclists were also allowed to cover the same route.
The fastest over the full distance were Tibor Erős in 17:35:02 h for the men and Katalin Nagy in 20:20:30 h for the women.
In addition to the sporting achievements, the environmentally friendly implementation of the mass gathering is an important concern for the organizers. Plastic cups are not used at aid stations and trash is selectively collected. This means the amount of waste can be kept to a minimum.
In addition, as part of a joint charity campaign with BioTechUSA, participants had the opportunity to donate the deposit fee for their timing chips to charity for the sixth time. The company increased the amount by a total of 15 million forints from two different sources. Healthcare institutions, non-profit organizations and foundations might be nominated via the Ultrabalaton’s social media page. Six institutions were selected and the winners were finally determined by a vote among the participants. This year, donations amounting to 23 million forints were collected, which went to foundations that are committed to social purposes and to the “Géza Hetényi” county hospital in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok.
