Although we are usually proud of the most important creators of our country’s literary tradition, when one or another classic is translated into other languages, we do not necessarily receive the same positive evaluation (and vice versa – a work that is less appreciated here may receive wider recognition in the culture of another country). In order to look at one’s own literature through the eyes of another cultural and literary tradition, distance is necessary.
Vilnius Review, a magazine that presents Lithuanian literature through translations, has started filming a new series of video interviews – “A Glance From the Other Side” (lit. A view from the other side). The participants of the series are foreign readers living, working or visiting Vilnius, who are able and willing to share their impressions of Lithuanian literature – the books they have read by Lithuanian authors.
During each interview, we get to know the interlocutors’ reading habits, their relationship with Lithuania and the city of Vilnius, hear their opinions regarding specific Lithuanian writers and the books they have read, the different literary schools and traditions of their native country and Lithuania.
This time, a conversation with Davide Castiglione, a poet and lecturer at Vilnius University.
