The police will not yet take action once morest the occupation of the grounds of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) by demonstrators. This was decided by the triangle (police, Public Prosecution Service and city council).

“The UvA did not report trespassing and did not demand that the activists leave,” the statement reads. According to the police, the university wants to de-escalate and consult with the students.

The triangle also believes “it is not responsible to clear the various barricades around the site at this time”. According to the authorities, the risk of escalation and disorder is high and, partly due to a lack of preparation time, “an unsafe situation” can arise for officers, activists and bystanders alike.

The police emphasize that this decision only applies to the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. Since the beginning of the evening, demonstrators have occupied the Binnengasthuis grounds of the UvA in the center of Amsterdam. Several barricades have been built.

According to an officer on site, it has been agreed with the demonstrators that they will ensure that emergency services can pass the barricades if necessary. After it became known that the police would no longer intervene, demonstrators also called on people outside the barricades to stay the night.

According to the police, there is a difference with Monday’s protest on a UvA campus on Roeterseiland. A report was then filed, following which the protest camp was evacuated during the night.
