One day in early May 2024, we met Hoang Truc Nhi – Hoang Dieu Nhi (5 years old) once more at a boarding house in the city. Thu Duc. Struggling to prepare lunch for the whole family, Ms. Tran Thi Hong Thuy (30 years old) occasionally looked at the two children and smiled happily.
To have Song Nhi as healthy as she is now, Ms. Thuy and her husband went through a series of tearful days because since they were still in the mother’s womb, the two children were attached to each other in the pelvic area.
“During the fetal ultrasound, I was dumbfounded when the doctor said the two babies were conjoined and had to share the same umbilical cord. At any cost, I have to keep my child alive.” Ms. Thuy was emotional.

Having gone through countless difficulties, on June 7, 2019, Truc Nhi – Dieu Nhi were born in a conjoined body. With inconveniences that cannot be expressed in words, the two children gradually grew up in the boundless love of their parents. Then once once more, the challenge was placed on the shoulders of Thuy and her husband: Do they have surgery to separate them or just let their two children grow up like that.
But with the desire of parents, the desire to see their two children in a separate body, along with the strong belief in the medical team, Thuy and her husband were able to move forward strongly.
On July 15, 2020, the moment Truc Nhi was separated from Dieu Nhi and transferred to another operating room, everyone burst into happiness. After 12 hours in the operating room of nearly 100 doctors and nurses from many different hospitals, the team was satisfied as they gradually reached their dream, giving Song Nhi a healthy life.
“Emotions at that time were very chaotic, outside the operating room I mightn’t stand still. I might only cry, pray for my child and put all my trust in the doctor. Luckily, the surgery was successful.” Ms. Thuy choked.
Recalling the time Song Nhi was discharged from the hospital and took her first steps home, Thuy mightn’t hold back her tears.
“Truc Nhi (Strawberry) learned to walk first, Dieu Nhi (Tao) 2 weeks behind her. Seeing their child learn to walk, the couple burst into tears and were very happy. Even in my dreams, I never thought that one day my two children would be separated and walk like any other normal children.
Currently, the two children’s health is getting better and better, Strawberry and Apple can both go to the toilet on their own, run and play everywhere. As for Dau, she is still wearing a temporary colostomy bag and has to wait for the doctor to check to see if she is qualified for a real colostomy or if she has to wear a colostomy bag for the rest of her life.”
I just hope you two have a peaceful life…
Holding Song Nhi in his arms, Mr. Hoang Anh (36 years old) said that in the past 2 years, Dau – Tao has had to go to the hospital less often, only needing to return to the City Children’s Hospital once a year for a check-up.
“In the past, the two children often had minor pain, but now they are better, but they are a bit anorexic and stunted compared to their peers. Partly due to the digestive tract when two children have to share a piece of intestine each. Apples take the upper part of the colon, Strawberries take the lower part.
Over the past 5 years, he and his wife’s emotions have gone up and down with their children. Seeing my child getting better day by day makes me very happy, but I don’t know what will happen in the future.” Having said that, Mr. Hoang Anh looked at Truc Nhi and was speechless.
“Maybe now Dau is used to using a temporary anus, but when he grows up, I don’t know what he will think. They also gradually explained to their child regarding the scars on his body and regarding the temporary anal sac. I just hope that the two of you will have a peaceful life in the future.”
Seeing photos taken together before they were separated, the two children innocently asked their parents: “Why are we like this?”, “Why did the doctor hang my picture at the hospital?” Every time this happens, Ms. Thuy and her husband’s emotions become confused, remembering the journey of their two children.
“The children love going to the hospital, I must say they love it when they go there (City Children’s Hospital) there are many toys, the doctors at the hospital are also happy,” Ms. Thuy said, turning to ask Song Nhi.
– Are there any doctors at the hospital?
– Yes, Doctor Vu – Truc Nhi quickly replied.
– And then go to the hospital to meet your mother?
– Yes, Lan Anh’s mother – Dieu Nhi replied playfully.
Looking at the two children growing up, running and laughing in the small house, Thuy and her husband might not hide their happiness. Even with Truc Nhi, there are still wounds that have not healed…
“The kids are older now so they understand. They’ve been in kindergarten for 2 years now. Even though they’re a bit stunted, they’re very strong and don’t get tired when they walk and run. When we get home from school, the two sisters play until they fall asleep, bringing positive energy to the whole family.” Mr. Hoang Anh smiled and said.
– Dear Dau Tao, are you two happy going to school?
– Yes – Song Nhi replied in unison.
– Whose child is Dau Tao?
– “You are my father’s beloved daughter – And my mother’s beloved daughter”, the two sisters competed to answer. The small house is therefore always bustling with the sounds of talking and laughing, the squealing for toys, and the singing of the two children.
Perhaps, following their stormy journey from being in the womb to being separated and gradually recovering, Truc Nhi – Dieu Nhi seemed to be born once more thanks to the talented hands of doctors. doctor.
Meeting Song Nhi once more following nearly 4 years of separation surgery, we were truly touched when the two little angels were not only completely healthy, running and playing, but also alert and adorable.
Looking at the moment when Ms. Thuy’s whole family gathered together, the two children burst into their parents’ arms, chirping and telling stories, we can see the miracle of life. From two children conjoined together, they have now become two separate bodies, full of desires and dreams for a bright future.
