Up to a million cheering fans gathered in unseasonably warm weather for the National Football League (NFL) winners’ parade when just before 2 p.m. shots were heard on Wednesday local time (22:00 Lithuanian time).
“There was no connection to terrorism or domestically growing violent extremism. It appears to have been an argument between several people that resulted in a shooting,” Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves told reporters, adding that the two people arrested in the incident are juveniles.
“We have detained persons, two of whom are minors. We are working to determine the involvement of others,” she said, adding that several firearms were recovered.
Police said 43-year-old Elizabeth Galvan was killed. Local radio station KKFI announced that one of its DJs, Lisa Lopez-Galvan, was killed in the attack, adding that her son and two other relatives were also shot.
Two parade participants, identified only as Gracie and McKenna, said they heard a warning to take cover.
“We heard a couple of shots,” McKenna told AFP. “Everyone immediately instinctively crouched down.”
According to police, at least half of the injured were under the age of 16.
The local Children’s Mercy Hospital said it received 11 patients between the ages of 6 and 15, nine of whom had gunshot wounds.
All of them are expected to recover, and as of Thursday morning only three remained in the hospital, hospital spokeswoman Lisa Augustine told AFP.
A shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory parade in Kansas City on Wednesday left one person dead and 22 others injured, including a dozen children.
