The authorities of the indigenous peoples this Tuesday, May 7, issued a statement addressed to the Congress of the Republic in which they highlight their “fight for the defense of democracy.”
In the communication they highlight that they have “witnessed how in recent years a small minority, through corruption, has taken over government institutions, using them as a tool to repress and criminalize those of us who demand our rights, to amass wealth, without “It matters to them that they play with the rights to life, health, education and development of the Guatemalan people.”
They recalled that as indigenous peoples, since October 2023 they intensified their “fight to begin to rescue the country from corruption and demand that those officials who have served as an instrument of the corrupt pact to ensure impunity be dismissed, since the main person affected by their actions “Of these, it is the people of Guatemala.”
According to the indigenous peoples, thanks to this “fight”, the president and vice president of the Republic, 90 new deputies and 231 new mayors, all elected for the period 2024-2028, managed to assume power.
He added that these officials assumed power “despite the constant coup attempts by the corrupt pact, led by the attorney general and head of the Public Ministry, who by blatantly twisting the law and exceeding their functions left “to be suitable and capable for the position he holds.”
“Given the clear illegal actions of the attorney general and head of the Public Ministry, during October 2023, we asked the Congress of the Republic to reform the Organic Law of the Public Ministry, in such a way that he or the attorney general can be removed for duly cause. justified, since article 14 of the aforementioned Law seeks impunity even when they carry out illegal acts in the exercise of their position.”
However, because “the majority of the deputies of the ninth legislature are part of the corrupt pact and became rich in exchange for leading the country into misery, this request was never known.”

“We remind you that you owe yourselves to your people and should not betray the representation that was conferred upon you,” they tell the deputies in the statement.
“If our request is not met, we will be taking the actions determined by the council and assembly, since we are not willing to allow the people to continue being mocked,” warn the indigenous peoples.
