Here’s what we know so far regarding the death of the 47-year-old head of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) and critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin:
Died during the walk
The Russian Federal Service of Prisons said that A. Navalnas felt ill following going for a walk.
“After the walk, Navalny felt ill and lost consciousness almost immediately. Medical personnel immediately arrived and an ambulance was called. Resuscitation measures were performed, which did not yield positive results. Doctors confirmed the convict’s death. The cause of death is under investigation,” the statement said.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said it had opened an investigation into his death.
Doctors resuscitated for more than half an hour
Doctors at a hospital in the far north of Russia tried to revive Navalny for more than half an hour, Russian news agencies reported.
“To [kalėjimą] the arriving medics continued the resuscitation measures already applied by the colony’s medics. They continued them for more than half an hour,” representatives of the Labytnangi city hospital told Interfax.
A.Navalno’s lawyers were not notified
A.Navalno’s press secretary Kira Jarmyš said that his team was not informed regarding his death. “Alexei’s lawyer is now flying to Charp”, where his colony is located, to clarify this circumstance, she said in a post on the social network.
But Western governments were quick to blame the Kremlin.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway stated that Moscow bears a great responsibility for
A.Navalno’s death.
“The Russian government has a lot of responsibility,” wrote Espen Barth Eide on the social network X, adding that he was deeply saddened by the news.

Polar Wolf Colony
A. Navalnas has been imprisoned since January 2021, when he was sentenced to prison for extremism. Last August, this sentence was extended to 19 years. It was just the latest in a string of prison terms for charges that included embezzlement.
He spent part of his imprisonment in the colony IK-6 in the Vladimir region, regarding 250 km east of Moscow.
In December, he disappeared for more than two weeks. At the end of the month, it was revealed that he had been transferred to the infamous colony IK-3 Charpe in the Arctic.
On December 26, A. Navalny stated on social media that following a rather tiring 20-day transfer to a remote prison beyond the Arctic Circle in Russia’s Yamal Nenets Autonomous District in northern Siberia, he is feeling well.
IK-3 is more than 1,900 km northeast of Moscow. Its name means “Northern Lights”, but the colony is more commonly known as “Arctic Wolf”.
The prison was built in the 1960s on the site of a camp that was part of the Gulag network of Stalinist camps. It can hold up to 1,020 prisoners. Prisoners work on processing reindeer skins.
