The first Eurovision semi-finals took place on Tuesday evening in Sweden. France is one of the automatically qualified countries. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict took the stage during the evening.

At Eurovision, six countries are always automatically qualified for the final. These are the main countries funding the European Broadcasting Union, which organizes the competition: Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the United Kingdom and the organizing country, Sweden this year.

Tuesday evening, a first semi-final was organized in Malmö in Sweden. Two of the favorite countries, Croatia and Ukraine, qualified for the final. “Teresa & Maria”, by Ukrainians alyona alyona, and Jerry Heil mix rap and pop with operatic accents while “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” by Croatian Baby Lasagna, mixes rock and electro.

Against the backdrop of the war between Israel and Hamas, possible positions taken by artists were closely scrutinized. The conflict was invited on stage from the opening number with the Swedish singer Eric Saade. The artist, whose father is of Palestinian origin, wore a keffiyeh around his arm. His action was deplored by Swedish public television, SVT. “It is regrettable that he uses his participation in this way,” commented a spokesperson for the organization.

At the end of this first semi-final, decided by public votes, Serbia, Portugal, Slovenia, Lithuania, Finland, Cyprus, Ireland and Luxembourg have also qualified. The second semi-final will take place on Thursday evening.
