Serious diseases caused by dental problems

Russia – Dr. Muhammad Dakhkelgov, a specialist in dentistry and surgery, points out that one of the most common categories of diseases caused by dental health problems is cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases.
The doctor says: “A large group of blood vessels penetrates the entire oral cavity, and its blood supply is very active. On the one hand, this is necessary so that the teeth and soft tissues get enough nutrition, but on the other hand, any infection, or bacteria in the oral cavity spread very quickly through the bloodstream throughout the body, penetrating into the body’s organs, including the heart and blood vessels. “.

A second group of diseases is associated with the spread of bacteria through the bloodstream – diseases of the digestive system.

“Infection and bacteria are not the only threat to the digestive system,” he says. If the patient does not have teeth or the teeth are affected by caries, and the gums are inflamed, the process of chewing food worsens. That is, a mass of food that is not chewed well reaches the stomach, which becomes difficult to digest. Because of this, the stomach secretes a much larger amount of hydrochloric acid and enzymes to digest it. Increased acid secretion can eventually lead to the development of gastritis, ulcers, and irritable bowel syndrome.”

The third category is diseases of the nose, ear, and throat.

“The roots of the upper teeth are adjacent to or even enter the maxillary sinuses – large cavities to the left and right of the nose,” he says. If the tooth is not treated, infection and inflammation will spread from the root to the surrounding tissue and can affect the maxillary sinuses. Therefore, otolaryngologists identify diseases such as dental sinusitis, sinusitis, and inflammation of the mucous membranes of the maxillary sinuses.”

But teeth are not the only cause of these problems because there are temporomandibular joints that are responsible for opening and closing the mouth.

He says: “These joints simply move the lower jaw and allow a person to speak, eat and laugh, but if a dysfunction occurs in the temporomandibular joint that the patient does not treat (i.e. disturbances in the functioning and structure of the joint), this may lead to persistent headaches and migraines. The injured person usually resorts to internal medicine specialists and neurologists, who often refer him to a jaw specialist, who diagnoses the cause and prescribes the necessary treatment for the temporomandibular joint.”

According to him, failure to treat temporomandibular joint dysfunction negatively affects the condition of the spine, causing deflection, neck pain, and poor vision and hearing. For these reasons, a jaw specialist should be consulted when clicking or clacking and pain in the temporomandibular joint appear, or difficulty opening the mouth.
