“An eleven-month-old boy was admitted to our department at the weekend. The child was crawling in the garden when he was hit by the robot lawn mower and suffered a massive injury to his foot,” reported department head Johannes Schalamon. The child was operated on for two hours and further interventions were necessary.
Parents are often not aware of the risk posed by robotic lawnmowers, the broadcast says, also because item descriptions give a false sense of security. The robots did not always react to obstacles. Children of crawling age as well as pets are repeatedly injured. At the clinic, two to three small children are treated every year following accidents involving robotic lawnmowers, with serious injuries including amputation. However, there are also always serious injuries to older children, including following accidents with hand lawn mowers and mowing tractors.
