H Grid Telecomsubsidiary company and telecommunications services provider of the Independent Electricity Transmission Operator (ADMIE) and the Quadrivium Digital, are joining forces for the creation of a new open access cable insulation station in Chania, Crete.
The cable station will be developed as part of the construction of a new Data Center with an initial capacity of 20 MW to be erected by Quadrivium and will simultaneously act as an interconnection hub for the installation of international submarine fiber optic cable systems from Asia and Africa, which will cross the Eastern Mediterranean . The hub will connect Greece and the Balkans-Mediterranean region with Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Cyprus, Egypt, the Arab Gulf countries and other destinations to the east, south and west.
Grid Telecom and Quadrivium Digital they will offer state-of-the-art infrastructure and advanced services for the safe installation and operation of the new submarine cable systems in Crete, achieving strong backup, advanced cyber security and high reliability.
The new facilities will combine world-class containment infrastructure as well as reliable co-location solutions in an open access Data Center with Tier III+ certification.
As far as coastal facilities are concerned, eight subsea pipelines will be constructed with the potential for multiple silting wells. The cable systems that will be sealed will pass through protected undersea conduits and will be interconnected via terrestrial optical links to the new cable station within Quadrivium’s Data Center.
Grid Telecom and Quadrivium they take the lead through the development of appropriate complementary infrastructures that will be a reception point for the new international submarine cable systems while providing technical support and maintenance services at the level of infrastructures and operational applications. As part of the project, Grid Telecom will offer low-latency data transfer connectivity, and ultra-high-speed interconnections, through alternative terrestrial and undersea fiber optic routes, to all existing and new Data Centers in Crete, mainland Greece and neighboring countries, leveraging its potential as a neutral regional hub in the wider region.
The President and CEO of ADMIE, Mr. Manos Manousakis, stated:
“Greece’s presence on the digital map of the region is significantly strengthened by the cooperation of our subsidiary company Grid Telecom with Quadrivium. With Crete as a key hub, the new telecommunications infrastructure will contribute to the creation of an additional data transmission corridor of great geopolitical value between Europe, the Middle East and Africa. ADMIE Group, through its infrastructure, continues to create synergies and added value for the country by contributing to its energy and digital transformation”.
The President of Grid Telecom, Mr. Costas Agathakis, said:
“We are constantly looking for ways to strategically expand our services at the partner and customer level. In this context, our plans to work with Quadrivium Digital to build a new telecommunications cable shielding station in Crete will significantly support the implementation of new, international alternative data transfer routes. Furthermore, this synergy will strengthen the island’s strategic role as a critical open access digital hub in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans.”
Quadrivium CEO Mr Aditya Ayyagari said:
“Chania is the easternmost point where international networks can be interconnected with the regulatory and commercial framework of the European Union, with latency times of 10-15 ms, to Greece, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Israel and the Gulf countries – halving data transfer delays to Marseille. This strategic partnership with ADMIE and Grid Telecom creates a combined stranding and interconnection solution that helps submarine cable consortia completely free from costly and time-consuming permitting processes as well as stranding infrastructure construction. In addition, the possibility of direct interconnection with other submarine cable systems, regional providers and digital platforms within Quadrivium’s interconnection Data Center, creates a rich ecosystem that contributes to the digital transformation of Greece, Crete and the Municipality of Chania”.
About ADMIE:
The Independent Electricity Transmission Operator (IEO) is charged with the operation, control, maintenance and development of the Electricity Transmission System of Greece. It plans and implements strategic projects worth 5 billion euros over a 10-year horizon with the aim of upgrading and expanding electrical interconnections in mainland and insular Greece. These include the Crete-Attica power link complemented by twin fiber optic cables, the completion of the Cyclades interconnections, as well as the Dodecanese and NE Aegean interconnections. ADMIE has recently taken over as the implementing body of the electrical interconnection Greece-Cyprus-Israel Great Sea Interconnector, is launching new international interconnections with Italy, Albania, North Macedonia and Turkey and is maturing the Green Aegean Interconnector project, a new electrical corridor between Greece and of Southern Germany for the transfer of clean energy from Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean to the large consumption centers of Central Europe.
