Red Hat Powers the Future of Supercomputing with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as they Build El Capitan
Red Hat, Inc., a global leader in providing open source solutions, today announced that Red Hat Enterprise Linux it will be the operating system platform for El Capitan, the first exascale supercomputer of the National Nuclear Security Administration, the North American entity responsible for the security of nuclear arsenals. When fully deployed in mid-to-late 2024, El Capitan is expected to reach a processing capacity of more than two (double precision) exaflops per second and will be used by all three of NNSA’s Tri-Labs (LLNL, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory) to help address safety and reliability hurdles in the U.S. nuclear stockpile. The supercomputer and Tuolumne, an accompanying system that will be used for unclassified research, will also support research areas that include climate science, computational biology, material discovery, high-density physics, material modeling and more.
The Partnership
LLNL has a long history of partnership with Red Hat, having used RHEL as the framework for many of its systems, 11 of which make the Top 500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers. LLNL also uses Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the default operating system for several smaller supercomputers within tight collaboration networks, such as Tuolumne and RZAdams, to establish a standard operating environment across most lab systems.
