The one who made millions of French people love reading is no more. The presenter and writer Bernard Pivot died, according to an announcement from his daughter, Cécile Pivot, this Monday, May 6. He turned 89 this Sunday.

Inseparable from its glasses and always one book by hand, Bernard Pivot animated live for fifteen yearsfrom 1975 to 1990, the show “Apostrophes”. In this program followed by millions of viewers, authors debated around a common subject. The show was as funny as it was controversial, with the guests not shying away from drinking, smoking or insulting each other.

After the discontinuation of “Apostrophes”, the man of letters created “Culture broth”a cultural program also broadcast on public service.

At the same time, from 1985 he organized “Les Dicos d’or”a spelling championship that quickly became international and more commonly called “The dictation of Bernard Pivot”.

Bernard Pivot had joined the Goncourt Academy in 2004, before becoming its president in 2014 then to withdraw at the end of 2019.

In addition to literature, the man born in Lyon on May 5, 1935 was a fervent fan of vin and of football.
